An Alternative to CPAP?
Is there an alternative to CPAP in Atlanta (Vinings area)? Continuous Positive Airway Pressure, or simply CPAP, is the “Gold Standard” in treating patients with sleep apnea, and it is the most widely used treatment because of its effectiveness – as long as the patient can tolerate it. CPAP requires that the sleeping patient wear a mask which is connected to a machine by an air hose. The hose delivers a continuous and steady flow of pressurized air that many patients describe as “being blown up like a balloon.” The continuous pressure keeps the airway from collapsing because a partially collapsed airway results in snoring, while a fully collapsed airway results in the much more dangerous Sleep Apnea. If you cannot tolerate CPAP, what do you do?
Cannot wear your CPAP? You have another choice: Oral Appliances
Although CPAP is the go-to treatment for sleep apnea, many patients (50% or more) do not do well with it. Among other issues, patients often complain of the discomfort. Many cannot wear the mask, others are often unable to sleep due to the noise, and some patients complain that CPAP restricts their movement during sleep. Several more complain about rashes caused by the mask or frustration with the straps that hold the mask in place. Still other people can only stand to wear the mask for an hour or so each night before they have to take it off, and other patients remove their masks in their sleep – going untreated for most of the night.
For whatever reason, if a patient does not or cannot comply with CPAP treatment, his sleep apnea is not being treated. This patient must have an Alternative to CPAP.
The best Alternative to CPAP for those patients who are intolerant is Oral Appliance Therapy. “Clinical Practice Guideline for the Treatment of Obstructive Sleep Apnea and Snoring with Oral Appliance Therapy: An Update for 2015 ” is the first official joint guideline by the American Academy of Sleep Medicine and the American academy of Dental Sleep Medicine. Oral Appliance Therapy is recommended for the treatment of adult patients suffering from obstructive sleep apnea who are intolerant of CPAP therapy or prefer alternate therapy. This new guideline supports teamwork of physicians and dentists working together to treat these individuals with Oral Appliances – EXACTLY the way Dr. Hair has worked with Sleep Physicians from the beginning. Simply speaking, these appliances work by moving the lower jaw forward and opening the “collapsible” part of the airway.
And, wouldn’t it be great if the solution could actually fit in the palm of your hand?
