Treatment for Snoring
What causes snoring? Before we discuss treatment for snoring, we need to review the Normal Airway:
Now we need to look at the Snoring Airway:
So what's the big deal about snoring anyway?
“Laugh, and the world laughs with you; Snore, and you sleep alone.”
– Anthony Burgess
Why do we worry about the Treatment for Snoring? There are several reasons for treating your snoring:
- Your Bed Partner. This study from 1999 showed that while patients with Sleep Apnea woke an average of 26 times an hour, their bed partners actually woke an average of 21 times an hour just from the noise of the Snoring! The Bed Partner of a snorer loses more than an hour of sleep EACH night.
- You may have to sleep someplace else. Many times, if the snorer cannot stop snoring, he is moved to a separate bedroom or the couch.
- Your own poor sleep. Just like the bed partner can be aroused form the noise of the snoring, a snorer, like yourself, can suffer micro-arousals which interfere with your sleep cycle causing poor quality sleep. The disturbance in your sleep cycle can keep you in the Transition and Light stages rather than your getting the Deep Sleep and REM that you need as shown on this page.
- Obstructive Sleep Apnea. It is well known that untreated snoring will develop into Obstructive Sleep Apnea with all of the associated signs and symptoms (Click Here).
